Andrew Gibbs of the Health Economics and AIDS Research Division (HEARD) in South Africa presented a seminar to Psychology@LSE

The Seminar was entitled: “Health Care Workers Managing the risk of Multi-drug Resistant and Extreme Drug Resistant Tuberculosis in South Africa: Symbolic risk management”.

In KwaZulu-Natal, Health Care Workers are between 5-7 times more likely to contract MDR-TB or XDR-TB compared to the general population. Andy’s talk used a social psychological framework to explore risk perception and day to day risk management strategies used by nurses in the context of limited resources and limited ability to influence their working conditions.
